How to Make Your Work Open Access

This guide provides general information and resources about open access and scholarly publishing to HKUST researchers. You will also find information about the author accepted manuscript requirement by the University.

Open Access Archive

Green OA

Green OA is also known as self-archiving when you deposit a version of your manuscript into a repository, making it openly accessible. However, the version of your article that can be deposited into a repository depends on publisher's policy. There are specific terms and conditions that determine how and when the article may be made freely accessible in the repository (e.g. embargo period).

Deposit AAM into SPD Institutional Repository

HKUST authors are required to deposit "Author Accepted Manuscript" (What is AAM?) of the journal articles arising from RGC-funded projects in the HKUST SPD Institutional Repository (IR) via Research Output System (ROS).

What authors do:

  • You can upload the accepted manuscript of your paper at ROS using the "upload" button. The supported file types include PDF, doc, docx and txt with a maximum of 100MB.
  • Once you save your submission and changes, the information is passed from ROS to the Library for adding into SPD IR.

What Library will do:

  • Colleagues in Library will check the publishers' copyright policy of each work. If there is an embargo period, we will archive the paper for OA after the embargo expires. The article's record (metadata) is still visible in SPD IR, and discoverable by search engines.

Submit Other Research Output to SPD

Apart from published articles, conference papers and book chapters, you can make other output (e.g. working paper, technical report, seminar presentations, etc) OA in SPD. Making your research output available in the HKUST SPD Institutional Repository will:

  • enhance visibility and dissemination of your work
  • increase potential of your publications to be cited by others
  • get a precise and permanent url which is handy for communication

You can use the online submission form to send your work to the repository. For enquiries, please contact lbspi@ust.hk.
