Nexis Uni: Basic Search

This Libguide introduces the basic functions of Nexis Uni.

Basic Search

In Nexis Uni Homepage, there are 4 options to search or browse. 

Option 1: Basic Search: enter search terms (with boolean operators or connectors) in the search box, e.g. ("Climate Change" AND "Greenhouse Gas")

Option 2: Use the Guided Search. 

Option 3: Discover a specific topic. 

 

Option 4: Before searching, you could narrow your search coverage by clicking "All Nexis Uni" and select your desired coverage.

More Precise Searching

Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT)

  • Use AND to retrieve documents containing both terms.
    e.g., bank AND interest rate

     
  • Use OR to retrieve documents containing either or both terms.
    e.g., tall building! OR skyscraper!

     
  • Use AND NOT to exclude documents containing the given term.
    e.g., trust AND NOT charitable

Parentheses

  • Use Parentheses to specify the order of execution of the connectors.
    e.g., (internet OR WWW OR web) AND (youth OR young)

Wildcard and Truncation

  • Use ? in the midst of a word to substitute for any character except the first three.
    e.g., wom?n will find "woman" or "women."

     
  • Use ! to retrieve variant endings of a word. (There must be at least 3 characters prior to the !)
    e.g., recycl! will find "recycle," "recycling" and "recyclable."

Within word number, paragraph, or sentence

  • Use W/[n] to specify the distance between terms in any order.
    e.g., financial secretary W/15 budget speech will find documents with "financial secretary" occurring within up to 15 words of "budget speech."

     
  • Use W/p to find documents with terms occurring within the same paragraph.
    e.g., floods W/p deforestation

     
  • Use W/s to find documents with terms occurring within the same sentence.
    e.g., ethnic minorities W/s china

Preceded by a certain number of words, word/words appear a certain number of times

  • Use PRE/[n] to find documents with the first term preceding the second term by not more than the stated number of words.
    e.g., bill PRE/3 clinton
  • Use Atleast to specify the number of occurrences of keywords.
    e.g., atleast5(air pollution) will find documents that contain "air pollution" at least 5 times.
